Niger Delta Avengers blown up a pipeline belonging to Chevron.
FIFTEEN days after the rampaging Niger Delta Avengers (NDA) issued a two-week ultimatum to owners and operators of oil blocs in the Niger Delta to quit, the new militant group has, on Thursday, blown up the main gas pipeline, which provides electricity to the Escravos Tank Farm in Delta State.
Sources, who could not give the exact location of the spot, said the gas pipeline blown up at the wee hours of Thursday, lie under the belly of Escravos river not visible to security personnel.
The implication of the damaged pipeline belonging to Chevron Nigeria Limited (CNL) is that the company's onshore activities in the region have been brought to a halt.
The group, which claimed responsibility, said in its Twitter handle (@NDAvengers) on Thursday that the attack was as a result of CNL's refusal to repair a major crude oil pipeline earlier blown up by the group.
A source told Tribune Online that the reason given by NDA smacked some understanding of nexus between individuals or companies who get contract to fix damaged oil facilities and members of the militant group.
No official comment could be gotten from the JTF spokesperson, Lt Col Isah Ado, just as the naval authorities from Warri Naval Base said the attack had not come to their notice.
Meanwhile, the General Manager of CNL on Policies, Government and Public Affairs, Deji Haastrup, also said in a text message to journalists in Warri that the attack was yet to be confirmed.
It will be recalled that the group had warned on May 12 in a statement signed by its spokesperson, Col Mudoch Agbinibo, that "to the International Oil Companies, this is just the beginning and you have not seen anything yet.
"We will make you suffer as you have made the people of Niger Deltans suffered over the years from environmental degradation, and environment pollution.
"To owners and operators of these oil blocs in our region the Niger Delta Avengers is giving you two weeks ultimatum to shut down your operations and evacuate your staff.
"If at the end of the ultimatum you are still operating. We will blow up all the locations. It will be bloody. So just shut down your operations and leave,” they warned
